May 5, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Atlantic City, USA
We drove an old MK1 Land Rover on a hot New Jersey night toward Atlantic City ('AC'). I bet Southside Johnny has driven this route many times and could do so in his sleep. We had the Carolina Chocolate Drops playing loud on the stereo and were ebullient to be doing a clean poster run again and to have found 'open ground'.
March 31, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Mississippi Delta, USA
This was a nice, clean run lasting several days whilst driving through the Mississippi Delta in an old Plymouth Fury procured from a rent-a-junk in Nut Bush, Tennessee. As we got closer to the end, Clarksdale, Mississippi, things became very clear. They ended up being clear as a country creek (Truman Capote).
March 15, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – South Philly, USA
This was a nifty little run with my cobber Brian Howard from the Citypaper again. It used to be that street postering had to have as an element of what Jack London called 'night-time as an essential condition.' For many years now I have worked in New Zealand on bringing street postering into the daylight.
March 10, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Philadelphia, USA
It's a beautiful day in New Jersey and the temperature promises to get up to 15 degrees Celsius. The official first day of spring is about two weeks away. On the streets here this morning, I met a guy wearing a sweatshirt with 'Wanganui' across the back (he was an American) and that felt real good.
March 5, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – New Jersey, USA
There was a break in the weather after basically a month of snow and rain. We just don't get snow like that in New Zealand (a foot at a time), and it's kind of difficult to imagine and to get used to. It would be like trying to drive over the Southern Alps.
February 26, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Northern Liberties/Fishtown, Philadelphia, USA
This poster run happened in about mid February and I had the able assistance of Brian Howard who is the editor of the Philadelphia Citypaper. Brian is a fan of New Zealand music and we had made contact because of this.
February 23, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Baltimore, USA
This poster run happened on Waitangi Day weekend. The Phantom crew did the run on the Sunday morning in temperatures of 18 degrees Fahrenheit (32 is freezing).
February 18, 2010. Diary of a Billsticker – Manhattan, USA
This small poster run of about fifty posters happened after a Phantom Billstickers delegation met with the good people from the Poetry Society of America. From memory, most of the posters were of Brian Turner's fine poem "Keep it Up." I just found it good fun to be out with a staple gun.
November 17, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – Chicago, USA
There's lots of things to think about with a head full of the Blues in the Windy City: The failed Volstead Act and how that applies in this day and age with drugs; 'Hinky Dick' Kenna; 'Bathhouse' John Coughlin and other crooked Politicians.
November 4, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – Seattle and Portland, USA
I'm writing this on the eve of Guy Fawkes's night and yet I did this poster run a month back in early October. I flew to Seattle and the shuttle bus driver became lost getting me to a Holiday Inn. That's strange. She also managed to incur the wrath (held back, breathing changed) of several other passengers as she went past their stops. That's weird.
October 29, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – Princeton, USA
On this run, I was carrying poetry posters by four or five New Zealand poets. The poems were by Hilaire Campbell, Michele Leggott, Campbell McKay, Geoff Conchrane, and Janet Frame. I’m always proud to do this.
September 28, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – South Philadelphia, USA
This is a great area and is nicely bohemian and worn in. I’d say it is comfortable and ramshackle. It is without the many false airs and graces which town planners and architects often, but not always, come up with. In some ways, it reminded me of the Upper Cuba Street area in Wellington, New Zealand.
September 21, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – Vermont & New Hampshire, USA
During the week of September 14th to the 18th 2009 I travelled from Lambertville, New Jersey to Lebanon, New Hampshire. This also took me through New York State and Massachusetts, possibly Connecticut as well. The drive is about 320 miles. I stopped at various stages and usually at gas stations and always at Starbucks.
September 14, 2009. Diary of a Billsticker – Lambertville, New Jersey, USA
I arrived in New Jersey about three weeks ago. I am living in a town called Lambertville which is about fifty miles from New York City. New Jersey has about nine million residents on .0015% the land size of Siberia. On the other side of the Delaware River, five minutes walk away, is Philadelphia. In this state, it is illegal to talk on a cell phone whilst driving, but motorcyclists don’t have to wear a helmet. What’s up with that?
September 1, 2009 Diary of a Billsticker – Knoxville, Tennessee USA
Jim Wilson here, I own Phantom Billstickers.
On Monday August 17th, my friend George and I set off to do a poster run in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The significance of the date of this run is that it was 32 years and one day after Elvis Presley died.
